A Better Way to Prevent Ear Infection: Introducing the TULA System for In-Office Ear Tube Placement

For children and adults who suffer from chronic ear infections or persistent middle ear fluid, ear tubes (tympanostomy tubes) are often the most effective solution. This common procedure, which relieves pressure and restores ventilation to the middle ear, has traditionally required a trip to the operating room and general anesthesia.

At Vitale ENT, we are committed to offering the safest and most convenient options for our patients. We are proud to offer the TULA (Tubes Under Local Anesthesia) System, a revolutionary, FDA-approved device that allows us to perform myringotomy and ear tube insertion right here in our office for many eligible patients.

What is the TULA System?

The TULA System is an innovative, minimally invasive approach designed to place ear tubes in the ENT office without the need for general anesthesia or sedation. Read more about it at https://tulatubes.com/

The system has two main components that ensure comfort and precision:

  1. Local Anesthesia: The eardrum is numbed using a revolutionary process called iontophoresis. A special numbing solution is applied via small earplugs, which use a low-level electrical charge to accelerate the delivery of the local anesthetic directly to the eardrum. This process is comfortable and child-friendly.
  2. Automated Insertion: Once the ear is numb, the physician uses the specialized TULA Tube Delivery Device to create the small opening (myringotomy) and insert the ear tube in a single, automated click—in less than half a second per ear. This speed minimizes the time the patient needs to remain still.

The TULA Difference: Benefits for Patients and Families

The ability to avoid a hospital or surgery center and general anesthesia offers significant advantages, especially for our pediatric patients and their families:

  • No General Anesthesia

This is the most significant benefit. TULA eliminates the risks and potential side effects associated with general anesthesia, allowing patients to recover immediately without the grogginess typical of sedation.

  • You Stay with Your Child

Parents can remain right by their child's side throughout the procedure, offering comfort and reassurance—a major source of stress reduction for both the child and the parent.

  • Faster Time, Faster Recovery

The entire in-office visit typically lasts around 35-45 minutes, compared to the several hours required for a hospital-based procedure. Patients can return to normal activities, like school or work, immediately afterward.

  • No Fasting Required

Since general anesthesia is not used, there is no need for your child to fast before the procedure. They can even enjoy a snack or watch a video while the numbing process takes place.

  • Cost-Effective

Performing the procedure in the office setting can often significantly reduce the overall healthcare costs associated with facility and anesthesia fees compared to an Operating Room setting.

Who is a Candidate for TULA?

The TULA System is FDA-approved for both pediatric patients (aged 6 months and older) and adults who are candidates for ear tube insertion.

If you or your child are struggling with:

  • Recurrent acute middle ear infections.
  • Chronic middle ear fluid (Otitis Media with Effusion) lasting three months or more.
  • Difficulty hearing, balance issues, or speech problems related to ear fluid.

...the TULA procedure may be the ideal, low-stress alternative for you.

To determine if the TULA System is the right choice for your ear health needs, we encourage you to schedule a consultation with one of our experienced ENT providers at Vitale ENT. We look forward to providing you with this state-of-the-art treatment option.
