Allergy Testing: Prick vs. Blood—Which Is Better?

Why test?

Knowing your exact triggers (dust mites, pollens, molds, pets) lets us tailor avoidance, meds, and immunotherapy for long-term relief.

Skin-prick testing (SPT)

How it works: Tiny drops of allergen on the forearm/back; a gentle “prick” introduces it to the skin.
Pros:

  • Fast results (15–20 min)

  • Highly sensitive for inhalant allergies

  • Performed in office with immediate interpretation
    Considerations:

  • Hold certain antihistamines beforehand

  • Not ideal if you have severe eczema or dermatographism

Blood testing (specific IgE)

How it works: Single blood draw sent to the lab.
Pros:

  • No need to stop antihistamines

  • Useful when skin conditions or meds (e.g., tricyclics) interfere with SPT

  • Good for kids who can’t tolerate multiple pricks
    Considerations:

  • Results in days, not minutes

  • Slightly higher cost in some cases

Which is “better”?

Neither is universally best. We choose based on your history, medications, skin condition, and age. Many patients benefit from both (e.g., SPT as baseline + selected blood tests for confirmation).

After testing: turning results into relief

  • Customized avoidance plan (home/environment)

  • Precise medication map (saline + steroid spray technique, antihistamines)

  • Allergy shots (immunotherapy) to reduce sensitivity over time
