Sinus Infection or Allergies? How Tampa Bay Patients Can Tell What’s Actually Causing Symptoms

One of the most common things patients say is, “I think I have another sinus infection.”

Sometimes that is true. Sometimes it is not.

Allergies, viral illnesses, and sinus infections can all cause congestion, drainage, facial pressure, and that run-down feeling that makes the whole week less fun. The challenge is that these conditions can overlap, especially during allergy season in Tampa Bay.

In general, allergies often come with sneezing, itchy eyes, clear drainage, and recurring symptoms that flare around certain seasons, pets, or environments. Viral illnesses tend to hit more suddenly and may include body aches, sore throat, fatigue, or fever. A bacterial sinus infection is more likely when symptoms are severe, last longer than expected, or worsen after briefly improving.

That said, the line is not always obvious. Some patients have chronic nasal inflammation from allergies that sets them up for repeated sinus infections. Others think they have allergies for months, when a structural issue or chronic sinus disease is actually part of the problem.

At Vitale ENT, our providers evaluate the bigger picture. We look at symptom patterns, the nasal airway, sinus history, and whether in-office imaging or endoscopic evaluation may help guide treatment. The right diagnosis matters, because treating allergies like an infection or taking repeated antibiotics “just in case” is usually not the best long-term answer.

If your symptoms keep returning, keep lingering, or keep stealing your sleep, it may be time to stop guessing and get a more focused evaluation.
