Snoring vs. Sleep Apnea: When Is It Time to Take It Seriously and Get Evaluated? 256-character meta

Snoring is common. It is also one of those symptoms people joke about until nobody is sleeping well.

While some snoring is benign, loud habitual snoring can also be a sign of airway obstruction or sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a condition in which breathing repeatedly pauses or becomes restricted during sleep. Over time, that can affect sleep quality, daytime energy, concentration, cardiovascular health, and overall well-being.

So how do you know when snoring deserves a closer look?

Red flags include witnessed pauses in breathing, gasping during sleep, excessive daytime fatigue, morning headaches, poor sleep quality, or snoring that is severe enough to disrupt everyone else in the room and possibly the hallway. Nasal obstruction, weight changes, anatomy of the throat, and other ENT-related factors can all play a role.

At Vitale ENT, our providers evaluate the airway, nose, and throat together to better understand what may be contributing to snoring or sleep-related breathing issues. For some patients, treatment may focus on nasal breathing or obstruction. For others, additional sleep evaluation may be appropriate.

If snoring has become a regular problem, it is worth taking seriously. Sleep is too important to treat like an optional hobby.
